ArbitrationMembers of the Council, together with other experienced sugar traders, who are representatives of Full members, act as arbitrators using their extensive trading experience and knowledge of the Rules to settle, by commercial arbitration, disputes which have been referred to the Association. When the parties to a contract have incorporated a clause to the effect that any dispute arising out of it shall be referred to The Sugar Association of London (sometimes referred to as the SAL) such dispute may be referred to the Association for settlement in accordance with the Rules Relating to Arbitration and the Arbitration Act 1996. The Association's Rules and arbitration procedures are conducted in accordance with English Law. However, where the parties have agreed a contract law other than English, the Association may, with the parties' agreement, decide the dispute. The Secretary of the Association, who is a Member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, will be pleased to discuss the Association's arbitration procedure with you. If you intend to register a claim with the Association, please contact us before doing so as you will be required to submit a registration fee and in the case of non-members, an advance payment against our fees and costs.
